The Plate Layer 5 is a railroad maintenance machine designed to pick up tie plates, located in piles on the shoulder, and place them in the proper position on the ties in a high production rail gang operation. The machine is comprised of two chassis connected by a tow bar. The machine is equipped to allow it to place plates for either rail and can travel at speeds up to 25 mph.
